Sadly the transcripts from 1611 were destroyed by fire and the 1791 version is the remaining version. Eli's quotes mix the wording of both bibles in the same scripture. I did not care for that and would prefer he had used the 1791 version, as it is beautifully worded and reflects the true translation including all books which had been removed from previous versions.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12603281.post-52516611988611885492012-10-14T18:34:31.748-05:002012-10-14T18:34:31.748-05:00Love your blog, in fact arrived by checking yahoo ...Love your blog, in fact arrived by checking yahoo and google for a comparable issue to this post. Perfect message for a summer movie, eh? And perhaps, even, going a bit further and doing that together time outside, in God's creation, on some type of joint adventure/quest/journey? She did this during the Twilight movies and I thought it was part of her character. In this movie, however, it was distracting.

Loved Charlize.

Thought the storytelling was a bit odd. What happened to the fairies at the end? They forgot to tie that one up. How about the supernatural elk (or whatever he was) who was hit with the arrow? No special powers besides turing into doves? And what was with the Huntsman showing up at the end during the coronation in street clothes, as if he just happened to stumble upon this ceremony. Didn't the entire castle, aye, the entire kingdom knows she had come back and would retake the throne? And he shows up late?! And in street clothes?

And what was with Snow White saying the "Our Father" while locked up at the beginning? Isn't this medieval times, before Christianity?

And why wasn't Snow White wearing a helmet when they stormed the castle? Fire flying, arrows coming from above and NO HELMET? WTF?!

All in all, it was a fun story, but the writer was a bit sloppy with some things.Del Phillipshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18197302290110013753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12603281.post-47933343422762647412012-04-03T20:32:22.326-05:002012-04-03T20:32:22.326-05:00Thank you for the insightful reflection! What I wonder is whether the deeper message, which is based on the experience of our postmodern culture and a sense of what is problematic about it, will be totally lost on teens. From what I have seen, there is a teeny-bopper hysteria out there that has teens, especially girls, wanting to dress like Katniss, to buy Hunger Games nail polish in forest-like colors, and to run out to take archery lessons because she was so "cool". The "cool factor" seems to be their biggest takeaway from the film, rather than a social message.

What is needed is a good discussion resource for parents and teachers to use to help kids sort out the issues that may be too mature for them to get from just watching the movie, because they do not have an adult concept of the underlying cultural complexities.jdonliturgyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15729552755992633453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12603281.post-25843342273011079302012-03-30T11:04:37.348-05:002012-03-30T11:04:37.348-05:00Great review. What I have seen is teeny-bopper obsession with how Katniss was dressed, and with her "coolness" etc. I just really wonder whether a deeper message, based on an understanding of what is wrong with our culture, is lost on them.

What we really need is a good resource for catechists, teachers and parents to discuss this movie with them. Otherwise, I fear that kids will simply take away the desire to emulate the "cool" stuff, like the "clownish" dressing or the archery... which is what I have heard are the two most popular elements with teens.jdonliturgyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15729552755992633453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12603281.post-4908827795572045922012-03-30T10:41:06.641-05:002012-03-30T10:41:06.641-05:00Wonderful reflection. As an old Russian Catholic woman used to say, "God must have loved the common people because He sure made enough of them!" This is another reason I enjoy the books so much. All of humanity is broken, and all of humanity is redeemable. Even Dumbledore confesses to succumbing to the power of owning the Deathly Hallows. Harry proves stronger than he does in destroying the Hallows. Yet Harry is not perfect. Everything Snape says about him is completely true- arrogant, disdain for the rules, etc.- but yet through his brokenness the good is able to be achieved. Same with us. I also think it interesting to compare the 'redemption' of Snape and Narcissa Malfoy. The repentance of the Malfoys seems to be quite selfish where they simply slink away from the battle, whereas Snape ultimately dies for the cause and ultimately the person for which he is now aligned. I think a comment that receives too little consideration is Dumbledore's to Snape during his confession. Snape tells Dumbledore "nobody can know". Dumbledore, seemingly rhetorically, asks back "nobody must know that which is best about you?" What is best about him? That he knows that he still has a role to play in the salvation story for the good even after his greatest betrayal. This is what separates him from Judas- he came back and accepted the forgiveness and changed his life. Might that we could all be as brave as Snape when we fall!Michael Liliedahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10814103765693951227noreply@blogger.com
